Repainting a room is one of the most cost-effective and exciting ways to transform your home yourself. A fresh coat of color can make a space feel brand new, with no time-consuming renovation required! But while hiring a professional painter guarantees flawless results, some homeowners love a good DIY project to keep them busy over the weekend. That said, here’s what you need to know if you’re determined to complete an interior painting project in a single day.
Gather Your Supplies the Day Before You Start
It can be quite time-consuming to make a trip (or multiple trips) to the hardware store on the day of your project, especially if it’s over the weekend when everyone seems to be out and about! That said, get everything you need beforehand. Your shopping list should include things like:
- Plenty of painter’s tape
- Angled paintbrushes and rollers
- Paint trays and buckets
- A screwdriver or paint can opener
- Drop cloths or tarps to place on the ground
- Lint-free cloths or paper towels
- Clothes you don’t mind getting paint on
Fully Prepare the Room the Night Before
The painting process starts before you even open up your first can of paint, and there are actually quite a few preparatory steps you should take the night before. Move furniture away from the walls and cover anything that’s staying in the room. Likewise, remove wall art, décor, and any hooks or nails. Also, take off the cover plates from electrical outlets and light switches. This is also when you should place down your drop cloths.
Lastly, lightly wipe down the tops of baseboards and the edges of any trim with a damp cloth. This removes dust and helps your tape stick and your paint adhere properly. If you notice any damage or holes on the surfaces that you’re planning to paint, be sure to also correctly repair them.
Transform Your Room with a Fresh Coat of Paint
When it’s time to paint, you’ll start by cutting in, which means you’ll use your angled brush to paint areas where your roller can’t reach, like corners, tape lines, and around trim. Apply paint on the thicker side to ensure that two coats will give you full coverage. After you’ve cut the entire room and given it a brief period of time to dry, you can begin rolling the walls using overlapping strokes. You don’t need to follow a strict pattern, but keep moving to maintain a wet edge and to avoid lap marks. Once the first coat is done, wait for it to dry before proceeding with the second.
Don’t Forget to Clean Up at the End
Even if you’re feeling worn out, cleaning up is the last—and one of the most important—steps you need to complete before the work is truly done. You’ll need to clean all of your tools, including your brushes, so that they can be stored and used again in the future. Replace your outlet covers, pull up the tape, and move your furniture back. It’s normally best to wait a full day before hanging anything on the walls, but pretty much all other cleanup can be completed on the same day!
