Adding a fresh coat of paint to your home can breathe new life into your space, but if you’re a pet owner, things can be a bit more challenging. Pets are often curious and have the tendency to get into everything, and they’re also usually messy (to say the least). Despite this, it’s still very possible to successfully navigate the painting process and ensure spectacular, lasting results, as well as minimal risk to your furry friends. Here are a few important things to keep in mind if you’re a pet owner and it’s time to repaint your home!

1. Use Safe Paints

When selecting paint, it’s important to consider the health and safety of your family members and your pets, and you should always thoroughly read the ingredient lists of your paint options. Be mindful of ones with unsafe chemicals; formulas made from natural ingredients like water, plant dyes, and essential oils are safer, but often don’t have pigments that are ultra-potent, meaning the colors don’t always pop how we’d like them to. You can opt for paints that have zero VOCs (volatile organic compounds) since these emit little to harmful fumes.

2. Stain-Proof Colors Work Well

Be mindful of bold, bright colors that show scuffs, marks, and stains easily, since pets tend to make messes, you might want to instead strategically select paint that can hide them well! Darker shades are excellent for this; gray, brown, charcoal, or even black can work, so use them in areas where your pets will be. If you instead want to do something lighter, you can opt for a soft off-white like cream—it’ll at least be easy to jump in and touch things up as needed!

3. Clean Up & Keep Things Maintained Moving Forward

Moving forward, you should also make an effort to keep your walls clean, to ensure beautiful and future-proof results. High-traffic areas and spaces where your pets frequently hang out need to be washed and repaired frequently, and you should also wipe down the surfaces of your wall at least once a month. This will keep your paint intact for several years.

It’s worth mentioning that a professional team will always clean up once they’ve finished painting, ensuring that your home’s interior and exterior are perfectly safe for your family and your pets. This is another reason to go this route—in addition to them delivering spectacular results!
