As a parent, you love watching your child develop their own little personality and identity more and more each day. They are starting to form preferences and opinions, which can be exciting and sometimes frustrating for you, but it’s all part of the process of growing up. One day, you realize that your child’s bedroom could use a serious update to help your child feel more at home there and to keep up with all their changes. While you certainly should shop around for fun, unique decorations, you shouldn’t forget to paint your child’s room. In this post, you’ll learn three tips that will make your child’s room as special as they are!

Consider the Psychological Impact of Color

Studies have shown that colors can have different effects on people. Cool colors, such as blue, green, light purples and pinks, and even orange can have a calming, comfortable effect on your child, which is likely the feeling you want to achieve in your child’s bedroom.

Vibrant colors like red and yellow can be fun and energizing, but they can be agitating to young children, so they should only be used sparingly or as accent colors. Likewise, black can inspire a bold, powerful, and overwhelming feeling for your child. Although white is typically thought of as a “safe” color, it can be difficult to keep clean in a kid’s room, where messes are common. Choose colors that will help create the kind of environment you want for your child.

Ask for Your Child’s Input

If your child is still young, they will be spending a minimum of half of every day in their bedroom, perhaps more. Although they will be sleeping for a good portion of that time, your child needs to enjoy being in this room, no matter how old they are.

One easy way to make this happen is to involve your child in deciding the color palette. Remember you don’t have to give them free range. You can provide a limited number of choices and allow them to make the final one, or you can ask them to pick the accent colors or a couple of décor pieces. That way, your child can feel that the room is truly theirs and feel completely comfortable in the space.

Think of the Future

Although a baby-specific room may be adorable, are you going to regret the colors and décor within a couple of years? By all means, celebrate what your child loves in the moment within the room, but do so with the décor pieces or smaller design elements and not the paint color. After all, it’s easier to swap out a couple of items on the walls than it is to completely repaint the room. It can be difficult to anticipate what you or your child will like in the future, but using a neutral staple or a color scheme that can grow with your child can help the room stay relevant and help you save some money in the long run.

By implementing these three tips, you’ll be sure to create a space that your child will help your child love being home while they become who they are supposed to be. If you need extra guidance to find the right paint colors for your kid’s room, you can turn to local industry experts who can provide additional advice.
